Ketogenic Diet Bodybuilding
No doubt you’ve heard plenty concerning the Atkins Diet over the years. You know, that incredibly well-liked and controversial diet that involves cutting right down on the carbohydrate intake. You may have also heard about “ketogenic diets” – it’s a more scientific term so you may not recognise it. Did you realise that the Atkins Diet is a type of ketogenic diet? In this post we will have a brief look at what the term means and my experience of this type of diet.

The Atkins Diet

The initial Atkins Diet book, Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution, was introduced in 1972. Dr Robert Atkins was interested, amongst other things, in obtaining his very own weight in check. Primarily using self-experimentation techniques he found that eating an eating plan suprisingly low in carbohydrates tended to help make him lose weight quickly. His experimentation was based upon other research papers and, because of his own studies, he became certain that the science behind the diet plan was sound. The resulting book had been a resounding success and, within the next 3 decades up to his death in 2003, Robert Atkins continued to generate popular diet books based on the low-carbohydrate principle.

Ketogenic Diets

Some would debate that merely the first “phase” of the Atkins Eating habits are “ketogenic” but it’s very clear that this element is central for the whole diet. There are lots of other diets of this type with assorted names and claims but, should they talk about severely restricting the consumption of carbohydrates, then they’re probably kinds of ketogenic diet. The process of “ketosis” is quite complicated and would take the time to illustrate but, basically, it works because cutting down on carbs restricts the volume of blood sugar accessible to trigger the “insulin response”. Without a triggering of the glucose-insulin response some hormonal changes take place which cause the body to start out burning its stores of fat as energy. This also provides the interesting effect of causing your brain to get fuelled by what are known as “ketone bodies” (hence “ketogenic”) rather than the usual glucose. The whole process is really quite fascinating and that i suggest that you read on it.

Controversy

All kinds of ketogenic diet are controversial. The majority of the debate surrounds the problem of cholesterol and whether ketogenic diets increase or reduce the levels HDL “good” cholesterol and/or increase or decrease LDL “bad” cholesterol. The amount of research studies is increasing year on year and it is certainly possible to point to strong cases for both sides of the argument. My conclusion (and this is only my personal opinion) is the fact that you could equally have the case that the carbohydrate-laden diet has negative effects on cholesterol and I think that, on balance, a ketogenic-type weight loss program is much healthier compared to a carbohydrate-heavy one. Interestingly, there isn’t a great deal controversy about whether ketogenic diets work or otherwise (it’s widely accepted which they do); it’s mostly about how exactly they work and whether that is certainly good/bad/indifferent coming from a health perspective.

My Experience

I too am a bit of a self-experimenter. I know this approach isn’t for everybody and it also does carry an part of risk. I’ve experimented with a ketogenic diet for about eight years now. I sometimes lapse, mostly during holidays, having said that i always return to the diet plan as an element of my day-to-day routine. I discover that I can easily lose the several extra few pounds i put on during the holidays within around two weeks of establishing the keto diet again. I suppose it can help which i really enjoy the type of food I get to eat by simply following this regimen. Most of the foods I like are usually loaded with protein and fat. I actually do miss carbohydrate-rich foods including pizza and pasta however i think eyzknn loss is outweighed (sic) by the advantage of having the ability to each rich food yet still keep my weight under control. It is without stating that We have to avoid sugary foods however i don’t have a great deal of sweet tooth and that i can still enjoy things like good dark chocolate, sparingly.

Conclusion

It’s difficult, in case you are just getting started trying to find a diet which fits your life-style, to know where truth lies in this particular debate; when the scientists can’t sort it out then how would you like to? The plain facts are that you’ll need to keep yourself well-informed, weigh in the arguments, then follow your very own best judgement. My experience has become largely positive however you will, no doubt, often hear of friends having issues on low carbohydrate diets for starters reason or another. There is not any such thing as a miracle diet and many of them are just variations on a theme but all ketogenic-type diets are dependant on an extremely specific principle and this principle continues to be demonstrated to induce weight-loss in lots of people. Perhaps you should try to base your opinion on the available evidence rather than on anecdotes. It’s your body and your health, after all.
